Martina Tierney OT and Martin Tierney from Seating Matters met recently with Edwin Poots MLA, Minister for Health for Northern Ireland in a meeting facilitated by Gregory Campbell MP MLA, in whose constituency Seating Matters head office is based.
During the meeting in Parliament Buildings, Stormont, Martina talked about the importance of the role of Occuaptional Therapy in promoting health and well being, and in particular through the use of specialist seating. Mr Campbell and the Minister were updated on the Seating Matters KTP research project, carried out in conjunction with the University of Ulster.
The Minister was intrigued to learn that the research study recorded an 88% reduction in pressure ulcers and therefore significant savings in the budget for pressure ulcers. Pressure ulcer treatment costs the UK up to £3.1bn ($5.1bn) per year and this research project indicated significant reductions could be made in this area.
Mr Campbell and Mr Poots both expressed their interest in the fact that Seating Matters is a local company, carrying out high-level research and product innovations to solve real-life problems for the older and more vulnerable people in our society.
